Debra Whiting was a visionary chef in the Finger Lakes region. Along side her husband David she founded the Red Newt Bistro, one of the most successful winery restaurants in the Finger Lakes. Her focus was always on using local products purchased directly from local farmers. Encouraging people to buy and serve local was more to her than about the food on the plate: It was about nuturing the inspiration of young farmers and creating a community where passion and innovation could thrive.
The Debra Whiting Foundation has been formed to carry on Debra's vision of what a localvore community can be. In the works is a set of programs to inspire and enable farmers to thrive and grow their passions, and to inspire chefs to learn the true meaning of buying, eating and living in a community where locally based agriculture can thrive.
